Which better way to discover the rich archaeological heritage of San Agustín than by horse-riding? You could either decide to take the short route which will leave you to El Tablón and La Chaquira or take the longer one where you’ll have a chance to also see La Pelota and El Purutal.
For a true Colombian countryside experience, you can hardly beat horse-riding. Whether you are an expert or a beginner, it is a great and original way to discover the nature and archaeological treasures at a slow pace. You have two options, either taking the long ride which will last about 4 hours or the short one, lasting about two hours.
The tour will start directly from Masaya at the hour that you decide. You will first head towards La Chaquira, an impressive statue built on the mountain itself, just a few kilometres away from Masaya. The panorama over the canyon there is truly breath-taking.
Next you will get back on your horse and head to the other notable site of El Tablón, displaying intricate Pre-Colombine statues. Then, if you’ve chosen the long ride, you will continue your journey with the visit of La Pelota and El Purutal, which count among the other archaeological jewels of the area. After this last stop, you will then return to Masaya, feeling like you’ve walked in the steps of Indiana Jones for a couple of hours.
