HIKING &CLIMBING – ILLINIZAS NORTH
- Bilingual guide
- Transport by Van / lunch
Illinizas is a historical volcano located south of Quito. This mountain is very recommended for experienced people that are doing an acclimatization program or willing to reach the summit of the highest volcanoes of the country.
In the next phase of your acclimatization program, or if you already are an experienced climber, Illinizas North, the lowest of the two Illinizas volcanoes is ideal for you. It is challenging, but achievable in one day and will prepare you perfectly to even more challenging peaks such as Illinizas South, Cayambe, Cotopaxi or Chimborazo.
You will be picked up at 8:30am from Masaya and from there initiate your transfer to Illinizas reserve which should take you about 2 hours. You will then receive a short brief and safety instructions about the hike you are about to begin. As opposed to Illinizas South, there is little chance of snow and the hike is therefore slightly less technical.
The hike up should take you approximately between 5 to 7 hours depending on your fitness level and experience. The conditions are tough, with varying weather, so you will need to make sure you are properly equipped. The views, especially from the peak are literally stunning and will be your best reward once reaching the top. You will then refill with a lunch box before descending (3 hours) and heading back to Quito.
