Climbing Cayambe Volcano, the 3rd highest peak in Ecuador is a challenging experience. You will have the first day to hike to the refuge and practice climbing on ice, then start your ascend to the summit to attempt reaching it before sunrise and watch an exceptional horizon.

Cayambe is a massive glaciated extinct volcano located 65km northeast of Quito. It has the distinction of being the highest point on the Earth’s surface through which the Equator directly passes. Although technically not real difficult it is rather dangerous due to very active glaciers, crevasses and avalanches.

DAY 1

You will be picked up in Masaya at 8:30 am and collect your equipment before travelling to Cayambe Ecological Reserve and hike up to the refuge. There you will receive a short brief and safety instructions and also practice climbing on ice before returning to the refuge for dinner and having a quick rest at early night.

Walking: 4 to 5 hr

DAY 2

You will get up at 11:00 pm to start climbing and get a chance to reach the summit for sunrise. Depending on your experience it will take you between 5 and 7 hours to reach the top. After relaxing and enjoying the scenic views, you will head back to the refuge for lunch and a short rest before travelling back to Quito.

Walking: 8 to 10 hr
