Illinizas South, the highest of the two Illinizas and the 6th highest peak in Ecuador is a beautiful but very challenging climb, only reserved to experimented and acclimatised climbers. It will take you two days to complete it and you will hopefully get a chance to reach the summit before sunrise to witness a spectacular landscape.
Illinizas South, despite being only about a hundred meters higher than its little sister Illinizas North, represents a far greater challenge due to its weather conditions and the presence of a glacier making it far more technical. Only experienced and acclimatised climbers should attempt this climb, but it will reward you with mind-blowing views over the Andean range.
You will be picked up in Masaya at 8:30 am and collect your equipment before travelling to Illinizas reserve and hike up to the refuge. There you will receive a short brief and safety instructions and also practice climbing on ice before returning to the refuge for dinner and having a rest.
Walking: 4 to 5 hr
You will get up at 00:00 am to start climbing and get a chance to reach the summit for sunrise. Depending on your experience it will take you between 5 and 7 hours to reach the top. After relaxing and enjoying the view, you will head back to the refuge for lunch and a short rest before travelling back to Quito.
Walking: 8 to 10 Hr
